SISU Multilingual courses: bridging cultural exchanges with languages

13 June 2025 | By Yu Taotao | 校內(nèi)

I

nternational Education Exchange College of SISU opened Overview of China Course in this semester. 95 undergraduate students from 16 countries came to China to participate in this course.

Last semester, I learned more than 20 Chinese mythological images in the course about Chinese mythology. Recently, in this course, I saw Nezha 2, which made my understanding of Chinese history and culture more vivid. ALong, an international student from Russia, said.

Lu Qinqi, the tutor in charge of the course, explained to everyone in combination with the textbook One Hundred Questions of China edited by him. "The movie Nezha 2 is actually related to the chapters of Chinese literature, art, science and technology that we want to learn in this course."

Li Suxue, an Armenian student of this course said "I have visited cultural monuments such as Longmen Grottoes and Terracotta Warriors and Horses before. At that time, I only felt shocked. After listening to this course, I had a deeper understanding of the meaning behind them. She shared: for them international students, if they want to stay in China for development in the future, it is not enough to speak Chinese. It is necessary to deepen their understanding of China through such in-depth classroom learning.

In the classroom discussion, International students use a lot of positive words to talk about their feelings about China, such as "openness", "confidence", "development", "security".

In the classroom of the Oriental Language Institute, Yang Lu, the tutor of the course, introduced the Hebrew writing rules and common blessings to the students. Yu Mengyao, who is good at calligraphy, presents these beautiful blessings in the form of pen and ink, Shana Tova (Happy New Year), Shalom Vebri'ut(peace and well-being). Belai blessing words are integrated into Finish In the Spring Festival couplets (They are written on red paper to express people’s good wishs). Yu Mengyao said through the classroom, they can not only master the writing skills of Hebrew, but also experience the delicate and unique charm of different cultures when expressing blessings.

Mr. Chen Yueyang was leading students to trace the course of exchanges between China and Afghanistan for more than 2,000 years in the class. The class was "Research on China-Arab Relations and Mutual Understanding", taking "China-Arab Civilization Exchanges and Mutual Learning on the Ancient Silk Road".

In class, Mr. Chen not only sorted out the context of exchanges between China and Arab through the Silk Road in terms of economy, trade, technology, culture and other aspects, but also emphasized that we should take history as a lesson and realize that these precious and continuous historical interactions are the core connotation of the historical inheritance of China-Arab relations. From Zhang Qian's(A diploma, exlorer, and traveler in the Han Dynasty of China) feat of the envoy to the western region, everyone read the praise of China's great land and natural treasures written by Moroccan traveler Ibn Batutai.

"In November last year, when I was a volunteer of the China-Arab Youth Development Forum, I accompanied Arab youth to visit the Quanzhou Overseas Traffic History Museum," Wang Yifei, a student majoring in national and regional studies in the direction of Arab countries, shared. He said when they saw the history of the ancient Sino-Arab Maritime Silk Road trade, Arab youths sighed that the cultural integration and mutual learning between China and Arabia have such a long history!

In this semester's class, the Chinese-Arab classics that Mr. Chen took them to read made him realize that this historical background has provided spiritual nourishment and motivation for the friendly relationship between China and Arabia.

Wang Yifei said that her many years of learning experience in Arab language and master's study of regional and national studies often made her and her classmates feel one thing. Many courses, including the "Research on Sino-Arab Relations and Mutual Understanding", were like "Aladdin's magic lamps" and also realizing the same: the desire of students to better understand the whole history of Sino-Arab exchanges.
