SISUer and 75th Anniversary| The Sycamore Tree

19 December 2024 | By Zheng Xiyu (鄭茜鈺) | SISU/School of Education/Vieira

Dear Swallow,

As the leaves of the sycamore trees rustle gently in the evening breeze, I find myself seated beneath their shade, immersed in memories and reflections. It's within this serene setting at SISU, my beloved university, that I pen down a tale of growth, inspired by the very sycamore trees that have witnessed my journey.

The autumn leaves, a blend of deep greens and golden yellows, remind me of the changes that time brings. Just as these trees shed their leaves each year and regrow anew, I too have undergone transformations during my time here. I've often found solace under their branches, pondering over life's questions and seeking direction.

Remembering the first day I arrived at SISU, I was overwhelmed by a sense of novelty and uncertainty. The campus, with its towering sycamore trees and quaint pathways, seemed like a world unto itself. As I wandered through its corridors, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what lay ahead.

Weeks turned into months, and the academic pressures began to mount. One night, amidst the hustle and bustle of assignments and deadlines, I found myself cycling alone under the sycamore-lined roads. The cool night air and the dimly lit streets added to the somber ambiance. My thoughts were a tumult of self-doubt and frustration, much like the tangled branches above me.

But amidst the chaos, something caught my eye—a single sycamore tree, bathed in golden light. Its sturdy trunk and sprawling branches stood in stark contrast to my fleeting emotions. It reminded me of a similar tree from my childhood, one that sheltered us during our playful days. That memory brought a sense of calm, as if the tree were whispering words of encouragement.

As I continued my ride, the sycamore trees seemed to guide me, their presence a reassurance that growth often comes with challenges. I realized that just as these trees had withstood the test of time, so must I face my own trials with resilience.

SISU has been more than just a place of learning; it's been a sanctuary where I've discovered my true self. Through participation in various activities, from academic pursuits to volunteer work, I've learned to embrace my strengths and weaknesses alike. The sycamore trees have been silent witnesses to these moments of self-realization.

One particular memory that stands out is my involvement in a photography project for a charity event. I chose to capture the image of a sycamore tree, its vibrant leaves and sturdy branches symbolizing hope and resilience. This photo, along with others, was compiled into a portfolio that served as a testament to my growth and the beauty I found within SISU's grounds.

As I conclude this letter, I can't help but feel grateful for the sycamore trees and the lessons they've taught me. They remind me that growth is a continuous journey, one filled with ups and downs, but always worth pursuing. And as I look forward to the next chapter of my life, I know that the sycamore trees of SISU will always hold a special place in my heart.

Yours sincerely,

Skylark
